Big deal - that's what the AUR is for, and that's how Arch works. There's lots of packages that I use that none of the devs have any interest and/or time to maintain so I have to compile them from AUR. This is a community distribution, and no-one owes anyone anything. I thought about non-free dependencies, security issues or whatever, but I really didn't know.Įxactly. I have asked because I really didn't know the reason nor could find why it was not on. It's great that the private repository already has it, but that's not comparable to having it in the repository which would - for example - be updated and be taken care of with much higher frequency. I understand that there are also other packages which cause much hassle between users, this one (freecad) is worth many many hours of compilation so I asked the reasons why it was not available in a pre-compiled package in order to possibly do something to fix things. Thank you karol however I don't think I contributed any patch for that specific bug, I have made contributions for other kernel bugs. I think (s)he knows the difference as IIRC OP is / was involved in some kernel patching.įreecad has 40 votes and mplayer-minimal-svn has 42 so I want mplayer to go into first! And don't forget the pony! This is not about "FreeCAD not being for Arch newbies", it is about knowing the binary/source difference and if you are having problems comprehending that, then I suggest you do some reading before putting the blame on Arch. And you are wondering why does compiling take time? You have a precompiled binary for Windows and a source package for Arch. Please, just because the package *you* care about is not in the you have to start a thread? Too many packages, to few people maintaining them. I am just saying that Arch Linux + binary package for freecad is better than Arch Linux without it, so I'd like to know why it was excluded and/or nobody ever tried to submit it for the repo. I regularly use Arch Linux, Gentoo, Debian and Ubuntu so, yes, I know the difference. I am specifically complaining about the lack of a pre-compiled binary package for freecad (and its dependencies, like the huge opencascade) in Arch Linux.

And you are wondering why does compiling take time? If an Arch binary existed, which you can obtain by compiling, installation would be fast in Arch too.Īlso, this is not about "FreeCAD not being for Arch newbies", it is about knowing the binary/source difference and if you are having problems comprehending that, then I suggest you do some reading before putting the blame on Arch.
